Lake Pomorie

To the most amazing and beautiful natural attractions of Bulgaria can rightly be attributed Lake Pomorie. This natural pond is located near the spa town of Pomorie (or rather, between Pomorie and Aheloy). The lake is a very salty lagoon, the water of which in many parameters is superior to the Dead Sea in Israel. The concentration of salt in its water exceeds the seawater parameters.

Many tourists specially go on vacation exactly to the hospitable city of Pomorie, because here are located clinics with healing mud from the lake bottom, which, according to many websites, does incredible things: heals diseases of joints and bones, skin diseases, calms nerves and gives childless families the joy of motherhood and fatherhood.

Directly on the territory of the pond can be seen a large number of those, who wish to have a free medical treatment. People are daubed with mud from head to foot and wait before it dry. But everything is not as simple as it may seem at first glance. We strongly recommend not to make self-treatment, because mud baths give a huge burden on your cardiovascular system and without a professional advice of a doctor you can make things worse.

Another important fact: mud, that is located on the bottom of the lake, (in some places it can be up to 30m deep) accumulates very slowly. The most “qualitative” mud lies exactly at the bottom.

The water level in Lake Pomorie is lower, than in a sea. The lagoon is separated by a small dam and a sandy spit. Despite this, the pond is connected to the sea by a small canal closer to Aheloy. The total width of the isthmus at the widest point is 50 meters. By the way, we want to advise the sandy spit. Despite the fact, that it is not very far from Pomorie (only 30-40 minutes of walk), there is never a lot of people, and much often there are wild beaches with crystal clean sea water and healing black sand. Although it is worth noting, that right next to the city the beaches are chosen by nudists.

From time immemorial due to high salinity of the water, on the territory of Lake Pomorie was an extraction of salt. It does not stop even now. In the town of Pomorie there is the unique of its kind Museum of Salt, the only one not only in Bulgaria, but also in Eastern Europe. It is located literally on the lakeside. Those interested can listen about the process of obtaining of salt, and to see it all personally. By the way, the salt is extracted by the old principle: by evaporating of the sea water from a lake surface due to the sun and wind.

How to get to Lake Pomorie?

How to get to Lake Pomorie?

As I already wrote, Lake Pomorie is located between Pomorie and Aheloy. To get to it will not be difficult (though buses do not stop right near the lake). If you live directly in Pomorie and you want to get to the spit, you have to find in the old part of the city a street Profesor Stoyanov and to move in the direction of Sunny Beach.

At the first time we have traveled from Nessebar to Pomorie by foot. We spent a good half of a day (we took breaks to take photos, to have lunch, to admire neighboring villages of Ravda and Aheloy, to swim in the sea near the spit), but we have never regretted about it.

And at the second time we traveled to Pomorie by bus (a trip from Nessebar cost us 3,5 levs per person), and then walked along the aforementioned street. It’s surprising, but many tourists, who rest in Pomorie, have not even heard about the beauties, which are located literally next to them.

Bus lines are well routed all over the territory of Bulgaria. Therefore, no matter where you rest, if you wish, you can get to Pomorie.

Another good option would be a car (personal or rented). But even in this case, there are some disadvantages. From the side of Pomorie, you can only get to the beginning of the spit. Further, the transit is partitioned off and closed. From the side of Aheloy this option is also quite useless (there is even a problem to walk pass).

For more convenience we lay out a map, which shows the city itself and Lake Pomorie:

An ornithological route of Lake Pomorie

On the territory of Lake Pomorie is located an impressive not only in size, but also in the number of inhabitants Bird Sanctuary. Since recently (ie since 2001), the pond together with the attached land is considered a protected zone. Since exactly above the lake passes a second, but not less major bird migration route in Europe, the variety of species, depending on the time of a year, reaches 268, and these are not empty words.

In spring curious tourists will see contented birds, that build their nests right there (on a small man-made island). Most of birds can be seen here in summer. It is especially interesting to see how they teach young individuals to hunt, to fly, to dive.

Some of birds species, that live at Lake Pomorie, are registered in the Red Book of Bulgaria and only from people depends, if they will live and delight us with their grace and beauty.

One of the options of safe and detailed bird watching is a visitor reception building, wherein are engaged in the protection of the inhabitants of Lake Pomorie. It is located next to the Museum of salt.

In a small two-story house you can read a lot of information from information stands, and if will be a desire and time, you can listen to ornithologist guide, or even enjoy a documentary film with detailed stories about the animal world of the pond. On the second floor of the building, you can go to a viewing platform and armed with powerful binoculars or a telescope observe the bird life on the lake. If you belong to curious tourists, the guide will gladly tell you about every feathered friend all that he knows.

On the territory of the lake, right in the water can be seen wooden pegs. This is all, that remained in the memory from bridges, along which previously was carried salt, extracted from the pond. Now they are chosen by a variety of birds. Frequently they even arrange a kind of competition – who will outvoice whom.

In warm waters of the lake is enough food for everyone. Here is prohibited to fish, and therefore birds feel like in paradise. In addition to birds, the lake is inhabited by amphibians (including reptiles) and mammals, fish and invertebrates.

A botanical route of Lake Pomorie

Directly on the dam, in all length of the lake, are located stands, which inform about plants, that grow on the territory. The high salt content of the water positively affects the abundance of plants. The pond is rich in algae (over 70 species), and on its shores peacefully coexist more than 80 kinds of various plants.

In some areas of the lake from the side of the dam grow cattail and reed. On the sand dunes between the lagoon and the sea grow Apocynum venetum, Eryngium maritimum, Euphórbia and beachgrass.

From the authors

Truly everything beautiful and wonderful is close. It is worth a little wish, and for you will be hospitably opened doors to a fabulous rich flora and fauna of Lake Pomorie.

From our own experience, we recommend personally go to the lake, taking the camera with a powerful zoom: so you will be able to observe an amazing wildlife without disturbing it. It seems strange and even unrealistic to observe firsthand how sophisticated swans with love and affection swim around their offspring, how a pelican cleans its feathers delicately or how a strict cormorant had frozen up in sleepy silence on one of the pegs.

The best time for traveling to the pond, in our opinion, is a morning with a little windy weather. Before lunch is not so tiring to go along the sand spit, like during a midday heat, and a light breeze blows off annoying midges. For the first time we were very lucky with the weather, but during the second trip we had no choice but to go directly down to the beach and walk along the sand because of attacks of annoying insects.

The huge lake is divided by dams for several ponds. According to stands, earlier it was possible to walk safely on such improvised paths and observe local flora and fauna. Now, most of that paths are partially hidden under the water. So we do not advise to take risks and walk along them.

A miraculous sludge with impurities of hydrogen sulfide and almost the entire periodic table of the chemical elements is not advisable to try for yourself without a doctor’s recommendation. There is a high probability that in the scorching sun, your body can not adequately respond to such self-treatment.

Almost after the end of the spit enterprising owners of hotels and cottages lease out rooms and even entire bungalows to tourists. Therefore, if you plan to swim in clear waters of the Black Sea, or be smeared with mud from Lake Pomorie, you can use a suitable opportunity and not to waste time for trip.

And the most important thing: when you travel to Lake Pomorie, except of water, hats from the sun, all kinds of snacks, swimming accessories and a camera, do not forget to take a sincere smile and a good mood.
