The attractions of Pomorie: photos, a map and our review

Among all the cities in Bulgaria, we visited (in 14 days of rest, we visited 9 popular resorts) we liked Pomorie more than any other. If we are now able to choose where exactly to go again, we would definitely have gone on vacation exactly at this resort.

This is surprising quiet green city with beautiful architecture, affordable prices, excellent beaches (including the wild, where you can stay close to nature) and a fantastic natural sceneries that you want to photograph. We liked it immediately.

Therefore, in this article there will be a lot of pictures, interesting observations and tips for travelers.

What is the difference of Pomorie from other cities of Bulgaria?

Most of the Bulgarian resorts are focused on income from tourists. That is to say they do everything to attract people who will arrive for 7-10 days and will spend their money. Despite the fact that Bulgaria is not an expensive country, the vacation in Golden Sands resort, the Sunny Beach resort or Nessebar is obtained not very budgetary. It is because of influence of high prices in the restaurants, at the beaches, discos, hotels and shops. What can we say, even if the taxi in Pomorie is 2 or even 3 times cheaper.

Even on the peninsula, which basically refers to the old part of the city are actively being built such apartment buildings

Pomorie, on the contrary, is oriented towards a quiet family rest with children and people, who come here for permanent residence. Here are actively bought up apartments, are lots of playgrounds, parks and cozy inexpensive restaurants where you can to overstay the midday heat. Accordingly, the prices are a little lower, less of noisy discos, but there are a lot of various cultural events. In Pomorie are frequent held festivals, in here there are come the musical and dance ensembles, are often held here the concerts of the stars. Some of these events are held under the open sky and free for everyone.

This approach allows the resort to attract much more respectable audience – here it is difficult to find a drunken youths in the morning, as in Sunny Beach, but you can easily get acquainted with successful businessmen. In general, instead of the continuing festival of the incessant discos, here you can enjoy a quiet and leisurely vacation.

Many people come to Pomorie in search of healing – at the resort there is working a lot of sanatoriums and health resorts, is actively used mud therapy with healing mud from the Pomorie Lake.

The city itself is very versatile. On the one hand the construction is not stopped for a minute, and on the other – architects are trying as much as possible organically to fit all new buildings into the old face of the city.

The old part of Pomorie is located on a small peninsula, connected to the mainland by two land bridges – in the north and in the west. For Bulgaria it is not uncommon – the same way there are look both Old Nessebar, and even more ancient, but little provincial Sozopol.

The old and new parts of the city – where to go for rest?

As in almost any European city, the most interesting and unusual is concentrated in the old part. There and beautiful walking streets and old buildings, and souvenir shops with a wide range of rubbish and magnets that most of the tourists for some reason so love to bring home.

The new part is more designed for locals and immigrants – restaurants here simpler and cheaper, and the buildings have no claim to architectural excesses.

At the same time, all five-star hotel complexes are located precisely in the new part of the city, almost in the suburbs – here there is still a vacant land near the sea.

Attractions in the new city are located pointwise – you have to get to them through the unremarkable districts. Should be added, that the majority of promoted tourist attractions are found in the new town. We advise you to pay attention to the monastery of St. George, but we would not advise you to visit the Thracian sepulcher – you would waste your time and money.

We would prefer to rest in the Old Town, there is more beautiful, and there are places to go in the evening.

A walk through the old town of Pomorie – what to see?

In the old part of the city you should definitely visit the street Knyaz Boris I. This is the central pedestrian street with a small park and very pretty buildings. There are a lot of small shops with pretty reasonable prices and a good range.

In the old part of the city you you should definitely see the Church of the Nativity of the Virgin – a small, but nice. Designed it a famous in his time the Bulgarian master Usta Gencho, who wanted to build a magnificent temple, in no way inferior to the Cathedral of Varna. Unfortunately, financial difficulties and premature death of the architect did not allow to fully implement the author’s intent – a church turned out rather modest. Since then, the church was rebuilt twice, and from the original version is almost nothing left.

The icons in the church are made in the old Russian style. There are also interesting a carved iconostasis and wall paintings made by Russian craftsmen. The church is most beautiful in the evening, when using the backlight, to the building is given a little fantastic shape.

Due to the abbot of the temple since 2004 it is held here the Orthodox singing festival, where come to not only the locals, but also foreign teams. Festival is held during the celebration of the icon of Our Lady “It is truly meet” – 24th June, by the new style.

From the center diverges a lot of nice streets with old buildings. Very nice to just walk around the city without any particular purpose. Practically every few hundred meters you will find a small park where you can rest on a bench in the shade.

If you long to go in any direction, sooner or later you will come to the embankment – the old part of Pomorie is located on a peninsula. You should definitely take a walk along the beach – it is very beautiful, almost anywhere are obtained simply amazing beautiful photos. If you want, you can sunbathe on one of the local beaches or have a meal in a restaurant.

For tourists is opened Historical Museum of Pomorie (you can visit it if you want), which exposed a large number of interesting exhibits – the city has a centuries-old history. Museum is located on the street Knyaz Boris I.

Исторический музей Поморье

Historical Museum of Pomorie is located in a former female grammar school.

The most impressive exhibits in our opinion are the mastodon bones, dead even during the Ice Age, inventory of ancient ships and amphoras, lifted from the seabed.
Lot of attention paid to the ancient and medieval periods, you can see an interesting collection of gold and silver coins.
Here you can also get acquainted with the Bulgarian national costumes, customs and way of life of the Bulgarian people.

The Museum of History is open from Monday to Friday, from 8:00 to 17:00. Please note that from 12:00 until 13:00 – a break.
Street Address: 33A Knyaz Boris I, of Pomorie 8200.
Ticket price: 2 levs per person, tour guide – 3 levs.

The new part of Pomorie – the main attractions

The new part of Pomorie is mostly built residential high-rise buildings and is intended primarily for local residents or for those who have moved to Bulgaria for permanent residence. The new town of Pomorie is located on the mainland, not on a picturesque peninsula.

Of course, the city is far from being such a beautiful, as the old part. Restaurants, shops and supermarkets are obviously simpler and souvenir shops are less common. The parks here are also found, but not a lot and they are not as shady.

Worth noting, that in this part of the city, mostly on the outskirts, located a majority luxurious hotel complexes, including the five-star. The explanation of this paradox is simple – on the peninsula there is no such a large vacant land for construction, especially near the sea. But living in such hotel, in our opinion, is very boring. After all, to go to the old town takes a few kilometers.

Separately want to mention the embankment of the New City, especially on the isthmus to the old part. There are obtained simply gorgeous pictures:

During a walk through the new town of Pomorie is definitely worth seeing the monastery of St.George – the most beautiful of all we visited in Bulgaria.

Entrance to the monastery, and even to the monastery museum is completely free. St. George’s Monastery is allocated with amazingly landscaped area, beautiful flower beds, there is a small aviary and even a vegetable garden. Children attend the parish school and have lunch in the monastery dining room.

In the monastery, you are sure to find an icon of St. George, and drink from the source of healing, to which is connected the legend of the founding of the monastery.

The monastery has a small museum, which was opened for us completely for free. There can be seen both religious artifacts such as vestments and icons, and ancient items related to the history of the city.

As a small outcome: we highly recommend you you to visit the monastery of St. George in Pomorie – it’s free and very interesting.

Just next to the monastery on the large lawn is located a circus big top. Animals were grazing right behind the small fences – we were able to see the buffalo and the llama.

After the monastery we went to see the Thracian tomb. It is situated outside the city, you will have go in there through not the best districts, so you will see Pomorie unvarnished. We were guided by navigator and because of it was difficult to get lost. But even without the browser you do not get lost, on the turn of to the sepulcher there is a pointer.

On the way to the sepulcher it is necessary to go past the large fruit orchards, where the kiwi is grown. This garden seemed to us much more interesting than the tomb, because we have never seen a growing kiwi and many other tropical fruits. In fact, in Montenegro we have seen how to grow the fruits, but a garden of kiwi – it was for the first time. However, it looked a bit neglected.

Entrance to the sepulcher costs4 levs. Besides of medium sized hills and stone walls, interesting maybe by its antiquity (ancient times), you will not see anything. And this is despite the fact that for 4 levs you can visit the 2 quite decent Bulgarian museums. So we do not recommend to visit this place – it’s time wasting.

It is also interesting to see the Salt Museum in Pomorie, which we, unfortunately, have not visited. The museum is located near the Pomorie Lake, between the new and the old part of the resort.

Pomorie Lake – a unique natural reserve

Near to Pomorie is located a unique in its beauty place – Pomorie Lake, about which we have prepared a separate interesting article. From the lake previously was extracted a salt, and now all of its territory is declared as a natural reserve – here you can see many unique species of plants and waterfowl.

Personally, we found mainly swans, pelicans, cormorants and herons. To see them in the wild is much more interesting than in a zoo. Especially if you have a camera with a zoom, you can see even the nestlings of swans.

Also, the lake is one of the most important health resorts of Bulgaria – the healing mud is extracted here. A lot of people are swimming in the lake directly, daubing with black mud or fishing here.

To learn more about the lake, we suggest you to see our articles: The Pomorie Lake, Hiking along Bulgaria, A wild beach on the foreland of Pomorie Lake.

The map of Pomorie landmarks and the most interesting streets
