What can you see in Bulgaria in summer? + Lots of photos

Bulgaria – one of the best countries for low-cost and high-quality recreation. Many people are afraid to see here a kind of the USSR, but in fact, in Bulgaria are many interesting places and entertainments for even the most demanding tourist. About Bulgaria is simply an incredible amount of myths. Some of them we debunk in our tips for travelers.

The country is very multifaceted. Only here next to five-star hotels and dozens of discos, you can see one of the oldest cities in Europe.

Only in Bulgaria, we were able to walk to get to deserted beaches with amazingly clear water and sand, reminiscent of the Bounty commercials.

And, of course, in Bulgaria, any tourist will feel as comfortable as possible: friendly people, low prices and European quality of products will please anyone. Let’s try to understand what and how is in Bulgaria that can be seen here and how to spend your time better.

What tours and attractions can be found in Bulgaria in summer?

Most of the excursions, which are offered in Bulgaria – along coastal towns and resorts. You can easily see them independently by bus or by rented car.

Such variant is not only more comfortable (you do not depend from anyone), but about 2-3 times cheaper. However, you will not be able to visit some of sights in such format.

We offer to look at the most interesting corners of Bulgaria, and determine which of them can be visited without difficulty, and what – only during excursions or by a personal car.

One of the oldest cities in Europe – ancient Nessebar

Attractiveness: Excellent
How to reach: Easy

Visiting of ancient Nessebar is included into a compulsory program of every tourist, who comes to Bulgaria. And indeed – the city is the most beautiful among all seaside resorts, that we have managed to see here.

Nessebar is one of the oldest cities in Europe. The old town is located on a small peninsula, that is connected with the shore by a wide automobile and pedestrian bridge. In Nessebar has preserved a large number of ancient churches, some of which belong to the Byzantine era. In most of them now are situated small museums, a visit to which, on average, costs about 2 levs.

We lived in Nessebar during 14 days and during that time we have learned the city well, we had an opportunity to swim at local beaches and took a large number of photos of Nessebar. In addition to interesting sights, we consider the main advantage of the city – its location. You can get to Nessebar without difficulty by public transport from almost any seaside resort of Bulgaria.

Close to Nessebar is located Sunny Beach – one of the most popular and expensive resorts in the country with five-star hotels and discos that do not stop for a minute.

A luxurious botanical garden in Balchik – a place with surprisingly beautiful nature

Attractiveness: Excellent
How to reach: Easy

We did not really like Balchik as a resort. There is a bit dull, and the location of the city is not very convenient – you can get except to Varna and Nessebar.

But in Balchik there is a surprisingly interesting corner – local botanical garden. A visit to this place is not cheap. We paid for the entrance to the garden and the palace 12 levs. But it is definitely worth it. The park is very large and amazingly beautiful, you can see a variety of exotic plants, palm trees and cacti collection, old Bulgarian houses and even the Palace of Romanian Queen Maria. For those who wish, there is a degustation of elite Bulgarian wines, but we have ignored it.

We did not really like the palace, a visit to which cost 5 levs. Inside the palace is almost nothing, tourists were allowed only first 2 floors. If you have the opportunity not to acquire a ticket to the palace – do not waste your money. But the park is certainly worth a visit. We were walking there for about 5 hours and would gladly spent more time there if it was not necessary to hurry to our bus.

Burgas and Varna – the largest cities in seaside Bulgaria

Attractiveness: Excellent
How to reach: Easy

Burgas and Varna – the largest cities on the coast of Bulgaria. Despite the fact that they are primarily large industrial centers and ports, there is really something to see.

In Burgas (correct accent – BurgAs) is a lot of churches and temples, a very beautiful Seaside Park, an annual exhibition of sand sculptures several meters high, a good selection of souvenirs. If desired, you can go to an opera or to a theater, visit local lakes or travel from Burgas inland. We really liked the city and we would gladly come here again.

Varna creates an impression of a large modern city. Here is also a lot of churches and temples, large shopping centers and small shops. The city has a dolphinarium, annually visited by many tourists. From Varna you can get not only to every corner of Bulgaria, but also to other countries – regular buses to Istanbul and Europe, Kiev, and even Moscow.

Pomorie – a small cozy town, where is really something to see

Attractiveness: Medium
How to reach: Easy

In terms of sights, Pomorie is a modest option. Here you can visit the monastery of St. George, where is preserved the icon of St. George the Victorious, the museum of salt, where you will learn about how earlier was extracted the salt and be able to buy several kilograms of it, Lake Pomorie, where you can watch swans, pelicans, cormorants and herons in wildlife and take a bit of healing mud, and also a wild beach on the spit – deserted and very beautiful. We do not recommend to visit the Thracian tomb – there is nothing interesting, and the price is as for 3 good museums.

Pomorie is interesting exactly by its local colour – the city is very calm and quiet, not touristic. Many people choose exactly it for permanent residence. There is almost no noisy discos, but are regularly held festivals and concerts, here are excellent beaches, very low prices and beautiful seascapes. In general, Pomorie – our favorite Bulgarian resort.

You can get to Pomorie by bus from Burgas or Nessebar. Such pleasure costs about 3 levs per person.

Most of all we remember swans with young nestlings and pelicans. The most convenient way to enjoy the lake – to pass along the spit that separates it from the sea. This way you can both see something new, and swim at deserted and very clean beaches.

We recommend to come here in windy weather in order to midges do not interfere you and do not forget your binoculars or a camera with a large zoom, an umbrella from sun, water and food for a picnic. Sunny Beach and Golden Sands – 5* hotels and a plenty of entertainments

Attractiveness: Bad
How to reach: Easy

To get to Sunny Beach or Golden Sands is not difficult. You can come here from almost any seaside resort by bus. But there is nothing special to do here. Prices are high, there are no sights, if you do not refer to them discos, 4-5* hotels and water parks.

The beaches of Sunny Beach, which are so actively advertised by travel agencies, did not impress us. The same sand, the same sea, as everywhere else, but a lot of people, high prices.

If you want to go to Sunny Beach to a disco, pre-think how you will get home. Night taxi fare is about 6 levs per kilometer. To Pomorie, for example, is 20-25 kilometers – total trip will cost you about 150 levs. And that if you will not be cheated. Public transport at night, of course, does not go.

In general, if you are very fond of discos and night clubs, it is advisable to settle in Nessebar – so you can walk to Sunny Beach and dance all night.

About this place was always a lot of controversy. For some people it seems a mysterious, an unusual and filled with a special energy place, and for others – only a popular tourist attraction.

What you can see: peculiar stone pipes height up several meters. Some of them are hollow, with an almost ideal diameter, while others more like a tree trunk. About the origin of this place, scientists argue till now. Many people believe that it is simply a giant fossilized algae from ancient times, when there was the sea.

To reach and see Pobiti Kamani you can by a rented car or during an excursion. Public transport here, of course, does not go.

Sozopol – one of the most overpriced places in Bulgaria

Attractiveness: Low
How to reach: Hard

Sozopol is often called Bulgarian Athens and local Jerusalem. In fact, except a small amphitheater and few old buildings we did not see anything. As one of our acquaintances aptly described Sozopol: “Were you in Nessebar? In Sozopol everything is the same, but 10 times less.”

You can get to Sozopol by bus, by boat or during an excursion. But since the city is located far in the south, to go there from most resorts takes a very long time.
